Diabetes affects a significant portion of adults in Bexar County, with about 15% diagnosed—a rate that exceeds the national average. This chronic condition not only challenges individuals’ health but also places a strain on families and the healthcare system. However, there are practical, community-driven strategies that can help reduce the prevalence and impact of diabetes in our area.
Understanding the Challenge
Certain ZIP codes in Bexar County experience diabetes rates 2.5 times higher than others, highlighting disparities in access to healthcare, education, and healthy lifestyle opportunities. For example, ZIP codes 78207, 78211, and 78214 have some of the highest diabetes hospitalization rates in the county, particularly in central and southern areas. Residents in these communities face equal or higher hospitalization rates for diabetes compared to the county average. Additionally, men suffer higher mortality and amputation rates linked to diabetes, showing the need for targeted awareness and intervention.
Obesity plays a major role, contributing to more than half of new Type 2 diabetes cases. This connection points to lifestyle factors—diet, physical activity, and weight management—as key areas for prevention and control.
What Can We Do?
1. Promote Healthy Eating
Encouraging a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help manage weight and blood sugar. Community programs that increase access to fresh, affordable foods, especially in underserved neighborhoods, are essential.
2. Increase Physical Activity
Regular exercise improves insulin sensitivity and helps control weight. Local parks, walking trails, and fitness classes should be promoted and made accessible for all ages and abilities.
3. Raise Awareness and Education
Targeted education campaigns can empower residents to recognize risk factors, understand symptoms, and seek timely medical advice. Men, in particular, may benefit from focused outreach to address their higher risk of serious complications.
4. Support Early Screening and Intervention
Regular screening for diabetes and prediabetes can catch the disease early when lifestyle changes and treatment are most effective. Health clinics and workplaces can offer screening programs to reach more people.
5. Address Social Determinants of Health
Improving factors such as healthcare access, safe neighborhoods, and economic opportunities will help reduce disparities in diabetes prevalence and outcomes.
Community Action Matters
Reducing diabetes in Bexar County requires a collective effort—healthcare providers, local government, community organizations, and individuals all play vital roles. By working together to foster healthier environments and behaviors, we can slow the spread of diabetes and improve quality of life for thousands of residents.
